Southington High School offers a hierarchical system with classes designed to suit student ability level. These courses range from levels 1-3 for most primary courses. Level 4 status is assigned to the most challenging courses at Southington High School, and these courses generally require a very high degree of commitment and ability. Highly motivated students who have demonstrated strong learning abilities are encouraged to take upper division courses where they will be surrounded with a synergistic environment of similarly motivated students, whereas students who require more extended and detailed instructional time are encouraged to enroll in relatively lower course levels where teaching can be more individualized to their comfort level.
Faculty members are responsible for suggesting to each of their students the level of courses that would be most appropriate for that individual student next year; however, students are allowed to enroll in courses of any difficulty level with the written permission of their parents and an individual meeting with the student's guidance counselor.
Southington High School also offers a number of Advanced Placement courses as well as for-credit foreign language courses through the University of Connecticut's Early College Experience program.
AP courses offered at Southington High School include:
Eric Swallow, the Southington High School athletic director, is the former assistant men's soccer coach at the University of Connecticut. He also previously served as the athletic director at Tolland High School.
Southington competes in the West division of the Central Connecticut Conference, which consists of New Britain High School, Simsbury High School, Hall High School, Newington High School, Conard High School, Farmington High School, and Northwest Catholic High School.
The Emblem is Southington High School's student newspaper. Six issues are published throughout the year. Included in the six is a Senior Issue, which contains features such as a "Class Will", "Playing the Game", "Daily Bagging"' and "Class Memories." The Emblem's advisor is Joseph Cipollini.
In early 2008, Southington High School's Mass Communication Department started a news program called "The Southington K Factor". Its first show was on Wednesday March 19, 2008, and it airs Wednesdays at 7:00 PM on Southington's local channel 16.
In September of the 2000-2001 school year, the motor that runs the school's clocks exploded in the basement of Southington High School. Students were kept out of building for days as everything was tested for cancerous PCB's.[1]
